PMDF will turn foreign format messages (like RFC-1154) into MIME if it knows how to do so and if you have a CHARSET-CONVERSION enabled in your MAPPINGS file for the path being traversed. The idea is we want PMDF to turn things into MIME whenever possible, but by default we don't scan message bodies looking for foreign stuff. If you turn on CHARSET-CONVERSION, you basically turn on message scanning and this is a byproduct of that.
For MailWorks on Tru64 UNIX, we recommend the following:
- Use CHARSET-CONVERSION to get PMDF to turn their 1154 stuff into MIME going out.
Use CHARSET-CONVERSION to get PMDF to turn MIME into 1154 going into MailWorks. This is because they don't understand MIME, only 1154 (actually a bastardized version, but we can ignore that for the most part).
This way, you treat MAILworks as 1154 and the rest of the world as MIME and let PMDF do the conversion between them. PMDF can do the conversion between them but you have to force it to do so by making it scan the message bodies (by turning on CHARSET-CONVERSION). A little confusing, we know, but the idea is to not scan message bodies (a performance lose) unless you have to. The two reasons you have to are character set conversion and format conversion. The former was implemented first and became the name of the actually more general facility. Sorry about that.
