Controlling the Name Server

To start up the name server daemon when your system boots:

  • On a UNIX system, fork named from within the relevant rc file.

  • On a VMS system using MultiNet for VMS, BIND executes as part of the MULTINET_SERVER process if DOMAINNAME has been selected using MULTINET CONFIG/SERVER.

To restart the name server:

  • On a UNIX system, first kill then restart named.

  • Using VMS+MultiNet, enter the command @MULTINET:START_SERVER. (Under VMS, you should have a REPLY/ENABLE in effect so that you can see any errors reported.)

After you update the data in your zone file and increment the serial number in the SOA record, restart your nameserver daemon to have the change take effect.
