1.4 Step-By-Step Installation Instructions

You must be root to install PMDF. Therefore, if you are not logged in as root, do so now.

If you have installed PMDF previously:

  1. Use the following command to shutdown the PMDF detached processes before you attempt to reinstall or upgrade PMDF:

         # pmdf shutdown

  2. Deinstall PMDF before you attempt to reinstall or upgrade PMDF. (See Section 1.8 for information on deinstalling PMDF.)

The following tasks must be completed during the PMDF installation. (See Chapter 2 for a sample installation dialogue.)

  1. If this is your first installation of PMDF, load the appropriate license PAKs (using the License Management Facility, lmf). You need a PAK for PMDF-MTA (PMDF-MTA-OSF). If you are also installing an add-on layered product (for example, PMDF-DIRSYNC, PMDF-LAN, PMDF-MB400, PMDF-MSGSTORE, PMDF-POPSTORE, PMDF-TLS, PMDF-X400, or PMDF-XGS), you will need an additional PAK for each product (for example, PMDF-DIRSYNC-OSF, PMDF-LAN-OSF, PMDF-MB400-OSF, PMDF-MSGSTORE-OSF, PMDF-POPSTORE-OSF, PMDF-TLS-OSF, PMDF-X400-OSF, or PMDF-XGS-OSF).

    Note

Layered products can only be licensed and installed on a system that is already licensed for PMDF-MTA.
If you already have existing PAKs, use the following command to check to make sure that the date of the existing PAKs are valid for this release:

    # lmf list full for licensename

where licensename is the name of the license in question (for example, PMDF-MTA-OSF). Make sure that the date displayed is later than the release date of the new version of PMDF that you want to install.1 New PMDF product licenses are issued when your maintenance contract is renewed, not when new versions of software are released. If you received new PMDF licenses at your renewal time, register these licenses. First delete the old licenses, and then register and load the new licenses. For example, if you received a new PMDF-MTA-OSF PAK, use the following commands to start up an editor and edit the license information in the License Database:

    # lmf delete PMDF-MTA-OSF
    # lmf register

After you register all the new information on your license PAKs, load the PAKs. If you want to load a required PAK individually, use the following command:

    # lmf load 0 PMDF-MTA-OSF

If you want to load all the PAKs at once, use the following command:

    # lmf reset

  2. Use the setld command procedure to begin the installation

    # cd /
    # setld -l location

where location specifies the location of the PMDF subsets. If you are installing the subsets directly from CD-ROM, use the following commands to mount the distribution media and invoke the setld command (assuming the CD-ROM device is located on the rz4c disk):

    # cd /
    # mount -t cdfs -o noversion,rrip /dev/rz4c /mnt
    # setld -l /mnt/OSF1-Alpha/PMDF650

    Note

If you need to stop the installation procedure at any time, use [Ctrl/C]. However, if you do use [Ctrl/C] to terminate the installation, all files that were created up to that point will not be deleted. You must delete these files manually.

  3. Review the following message and indicate where (which directory) you want to install PMDF:

PMDF will be installed in the directory '/pmdf'. If you want to install it
under some other directory, a symbolic link will be created that links
'/pmdf' to the directory that you specify.

e.g.: If you specify '/usr/pmdf' as the directory, a directory
'/usr/pmdf' will be created and a symbolic link
will be created that link '/pmdf' to '/usr/pmdf'.

Under which directory will PMDF be installed:

It is recommended that you do not locate the /pmdf directory under the root directory, since the root file-system is usually quite limited in size. After you enter the directory name, the setld procedure creates a symbolic link automatically that links /pmdf to the directory that you specify. After you specify a directory location, a confirmation message displays. If the location is correct, enter y and press [RETURN]. If the location that is displayed is not correct, enter n and press [RETURN]. At this point, you will be given another chance to specify the correct directory name.

  4. Review the following message and indicate if you want to relocate heavily accessed (and transient) PMDF subdirectories to a different file system:

Some PMDF subdirectories are likely to contain large numbers of transient
files, such as queued messages and log files. If you like, this procedure
will install these subdirectories to a different filesystem and create
    symbolic links to them.

e.g.: If you specify '/var/spool/pmdf' for transient PMDF files,
            the subdirectories '/var/spool/pmdf/queue', '/var/spool/pmdf/log',
            '/var/spool/pmdf/locks', '/var/spool/pmdf/tmp' and
            '/var/spool/pmdf/queue_cache' will be created and
            symbolic links created under '/pmdf'.

Would you like to relocate subdirectories of transient files (y/n)?

If you want the installation procedure to relocate transient files, enter y and press [RETURN].

    Important

If you are installing PMDF on a TruCluster, you must answer yes to this question. See Section 1.7, Post-Installation Tasks for a TruCluster.

    Note

If you are upgrading PMDF and answer yes to the above question, the current versions of the directories will be moved to the specified location.
If you do enter yes, you will then be asked where you want to locate the subdirectories:

Under which directory will these subdirectories be located:

Enter the name of the directory where you want to locate the heavily accessed subdirectories. The setld procedure will create symbolic links automatically that will link some heavily accessed subdirectories under /pmdf to the directory that you specify.

  5. Review the following message and indicate the subset(s) you want to install:

The subsets listed below are optional:

There might be more optional subsets than can be presented on a single
screen. If this is the case, you can choose subsets screen by screen
or all at once on the last screen. All of the choices you make will
be collected for your confirmation before any subsets are installed.

         1) PMDF V6.5 Base Product
         2) PMDF V6.5 Directory Synchronization Product
         3) PMDF V6.5 Documentation
         4) PMDF V6.5 LAN Product
         5) PMDF V6.5 MB400 Product
         6) PMDF V6.5 SNADS Gateway Product
         7) PMDF V6.5 TLS Product
         8) PMDF V6.5 X.400 Product

Or you can choose one of the following options:

         9) ALL of the above
         10) CANCEL selections and redisplay menus
         11) EXIT without installing any subsets

Enter your choices or press RETURN to redisplay menus.

    Choices (for example, 1 2 4-6):

Enter the number(s) indicating which subsets you want to install. Separate multiple, nonsequential numbers with spaces, not with commas (for example, 1 3). Multiple, sequential numbers can either be separated with spaces, or entered as a range (for example, 1-3).

    Note

The PMDF Base product refers to PMDF-MTA; your selection should include option 1. For example, if you want to install PMDF-MTA alone, enter 1. If you want to install PMDF-MTA, PMDF-DIRSYNC, and the PMDF online documentation, enter 1-3.
You cannot install PMDF-DIRSYNC, PMDF-LAN, PMDF-MB400, PMDF-TLS, PMDF-X400, PMDF-XGS, or the PMDF online documentation unless you are also installing the PMDF Base product subset at the same time (unless the base subset has already been installed).
  6. After you enter your selection(s), a confirmation message displays. Enter y and press [RETURN] if the selection is correct. If your selection is not correct, enter n and press [RETURN] to display the subset selection menu again. After you confirm your selection of subsets, the installation procedure continues with no further questions. Informational messages are displayed as the installation progresses.

    Note

Informational messages about configuring a subset refer only to the installation process. The configuration of PMDF is a separate function. (See Chapter 3 and Chapter 5 for more information.)
  7. After the subsets are installed, if you have been installing directly from the CD-ROM, use the following command to unmount the distribution media:

    # umount /mnt

Note

1 PMDF license PAKs use a release date, not a termination date. The release date prevents you from running newer versions of PMDF that were released after your maintenance contract expired. The PAKs do not prevent your current version of PMDF from running after your maintenance contract has expired. This is intentional.
