1.3 Preliminary Tasks for Upgrade Installations

1.3.1 Prepare to Convert Databases

As of PMDF V6.5, the format of PMDF databases has changed from Berkeley DB (SleepyCat) to PBL. If you are upgrading from PMDF V6.0 through V6.4, you must either convert or rebuild all of your databases. Before the upgrade, there are several steps you must take to prepare for the database format change.

If you do not have sources for databases that you wish to use pmdf crdb to rebuild after the upgrade, you must run pmdf dumpdb on those databases before the upgrade to generate the corresponding sources.

Databases created by pmdf db, such as personal alias databases, can best be handled by before the upgrade using the pmdf db write command to create a source file, and then after the upgrade using the pmdf db run command on that source file to create the database in the V6.5 format.

Note

If you are upgrading from PMDF V5.2 or earlier, those databases cannot be converted directly to V6.5 format. You must either (1) rebuild all databases after upgrading to V6.5, or (2) first install a PMDF version between V6.0 and V6.4 and convert your pre-V6.0 databases to Berkeley DB (SleepyCat) format, and then install PMDF V6.5 and convert the databases from Berkeley DB to PBL format.

1.3.2 Save Tailor File

If you have made any changes to your PMDF tailor file (/etc/pmdf_tailor), you must save this file before you upgrade because it will be overwritten by the installation.

After upgrading, you should check the new pmdf_tailor file and merge in any changes that you made to your version of the file.

1.3.3 Change PMDF User Account Name

If you are upgrading from PMDF V5.0, change the PMDF user account name before you start the upgrade. If you are upgrading from PMDF V5.1 or later, skip the this section and go to the installation procedures.

PMDF V5.0 used pmdf_user to specify a PMDF user account (an unprivileged account used for performing some specialized tasks). As of PMDF V5.1 the name of the PMDF user account is pmdfuser. This PMDF user account name is relevant for sites using PMDF sequence number files.

Note

The old pmdf_user was problematic on Tru64 UNIX systems, as it is greater than eight characters in length.
So, if you have an old PMDF user account with the old name pmdf_user, change it to use the new name, pmdfuser. However, if you do not want to change the account name at this time, you can use the following command to set the PMDF_USER_USERNAME option in the PMDF tailor file (/etc/pmdf_tailor) to point to the old PMDF user account name:

PMDF_USER_USERNAME=pmdf_user
You will need to reimplement this change (or actually change the account name) each time you upgrade PMDF, since your PMDF tailor file is overwritten every time you upgrade.
