Features at a Glance

Unwanted email or spam is more than just a nuisance; studies indicate that it has a substantial cost impact to an organization.  According to Ferris Research, spam will cost U.S. organizations over $10 billion and accounts for up to 30% of all inbound email this year.  Spam has an added cost to organizations for the following reasons:

PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway eliminates unwanted spam at the Internet gateway without filtering critical legitimate email messages, producing a large cost savings to organizations of all sizes. Its filtering engine is based on a combination of proven heuristic and artificial intelligence technologies.  As a result, PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway can determine whether email is spam instead of passively reacting to known spammers by creating rules that block them after a spam attack occurs.

Zero Loss of Legitimate Messages

Everyone’s definition of spam is unique. This is why PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway leaves it up to each user to determine what is spam and what is not. This is achieved by providing email users access to tagged or quarantined email that is suspected to be spam. Also, both individual email users and system administrators can create and maintain whitelists (a list of email addresses from which all messages will be delivered) and blacklists (a list of email addresses from which all messages will be deleted).

Control and Flexibility

PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway provides the highest degree of flexibility compared to other anti-spam solutions. System administrators can adjust or tune the Process Software supplied spam definitions by applying various weights to each rule.  A combination of rules can trigger a positive score, which indicates an email message is spam. For example, the total score of the combined phrase “low interest rates” and “click below” would trigger a threshold set by a system administrator that indicates the message is spam.

In parallel to the spam definition rules, PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway uses artificial intelligence to identify spam with a Bayesian filtering engine. The Bayesian engine automatically learns how to separate spam messages from legitimate email. By combining heuristic and artificial intelligence technologies, PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway identifies spam while making it extremely difficult to circumvent the filters.

PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway offers additional customization. System administrators have the ability to add their own rules to the pre-defined rules that come with the product.

Once email has been identified as spam, any combination of actions can take place.  email can be quarantined, tagged or discarded. The system administrator may select different actions to be taken depending on the score.

The process of accessing quarantined email is simple so users will not need to involve the IT department in its retrieval. If a system administrator chooses to quarantine spam messages, users are notified automatically via email with a summary of their quarantined messages at a pre-set interval (usually every night). At this point, users can choose to retrieve their quarantined email messages that they would like to receive.

If a system administrator chooses to tag the headers, a new message containing the message's score is inserted. Alternatively, if a system administrator chooses to tag the Subject line, the characters "[SPAM]" will appear in front of the message's original Subject. Either of these options allows users to set rules in their email clients, such as Outlook, Netscape, Eudora and others to place tagged messages in a special folder.

Unlike most anti-spam solutions, PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway allows both system administrators and individual email users to create whitelists and blacklists. Individual email users can create their personal whitelists and blacklists using an automated process, which requires no special training.  Since users manage their own whitelists and quarantined or tagged email, there is no need for system administrators to spend time reviewing thousands of quarantined email messages to identify potential legitimate mail.

Highly Accurate

In a side-by-side laboratory test of 9 leading anti-spam solutions, PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway proved to be the most accurate at identifying the highest percentage of spam with a low false positive rate. Over time, PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway becomes even more accurate at identifying spam as users build their own individual blacklist and whitelist profiles, the Bayesian artificial intelligence engine learns site-specific spam, and the Process Software spam filter updates are implemented.

Other vendors claim to have a high accuracy rate when it comes to eliminating new spam attacks.  Spammers can circumvent these filters simply by re-sending older versions of their bulk email messages.  These vendors are forced to react to this spam attack again by frequently updating their filters.  PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway is highly effective at proactively eliminating all types of spam messages.

Secure Updates

Process Software provides customers with regular spam filter updates that can be downloaded and implemented at the customer’s discretion. Many anti-spam solutions on the market today provide their customers with automatic updates of anti-spam rules which not only results in system administrators having little control or knowledge of what new rules are being applied to their environment, but also creates a security risk by allowing open access to their systems through the firewall. PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway is more secure because customer’s mission critical internal servers are not required to contact external servers on regular intervals to retrieve updated filters, supply filter statistics or report spam. There is no need to disclose any information on an email system or open an organization’s firewall in order to filter spam effectively.

Fast and Efficient

PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway is fast and efficient requiring minimal configuration and time to deployment. It provides you with quick insight into how many and what messages are being filtered.

PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway is designed to integrate seamlessly with PMDF.  email messages are received from the Internet by PMDF and then directed to the anti-spam filter for analysis (see Figure 1). If a message is determined to be legitimate, PMDF will deliver the message to the recipient, otherwise email is discarded, quarantined, or tagged by the anti-spam software.

Comprehensive Reporting

PreciseMail Anti-Spam Gateway’s logging and reporting capabilities allow system administrators to quickly determine why an email message was classified as spam.  This information is useful for determining if a rule or threshold should be modified.

Detailed statistical reports on filtered email provide useful information on the overall message environment.  Some statistics that are reported include: number of messages processed, number of messages filtered, number of messages quarantined, number of whitelists and blacklists, top domains sending spam, and more.
